Proposal Tools

There are two key tools for submitting proposals to the Roman call: the Roman Telescope Proposal System (RTPS) and the Astronomer’s Proposal Tool (APT). All proposals must be submitted through RTPS, and when new observations are requested, proposers should include the required observing parameters with the corresponding APT file; this page provides an overview of how the system works and how to use these tools effectively.

Roman Telescope Proposal System

The Science Support Center (SSC) designs and manages the RTPS. All associated hardware and software are hosted at the SSC, including the databases that support proposal and grants management. The proposal preparation tool (APT), the data archive (MAST), and the planning and scheduling system are developed and managed by Science Operations Center (SOC).

The proposal website serves as the central hub for submitting proposals and accessing resources for the Roman Space Telescope. It will provide documentation and tools needed for proposal preparation and submission, including technical information, user guides, and sensitivity calculators. User support will be offered primarily through a dedicated help desk, and the SSC will organize proposal workshops to help the community become familiar with the tools and submission process. In addition, the SSC will oversee the administration of grant funding for all approved proposals.

The Proposer’s User Guide is available here, where detailed instructions on submitting proposals through the RTPS can be found.

Astronomers Proposal Tool

The Astronomer’s Proposal Tool (APT) supports the preparation and submission of proposals for the Roman Space Telescope. APT provides investigators proposing new observations with an integrated interface for creating, validating, and submitting proposals, ensuring that all technical and scientific requirements are met.

The detailed information about APT is available here. Guidance on implementing observing parameters with APT through the Roman Telescope Proposal System (RTPS) can be found here.
